These next few quotes are entries in Rosalind’s audio diaries on the discovery of the Lutece fields and communication to other dimensions and alternate realities:

“The mind of the subject will desperately struggle to create memories where none exist…” – Opening Title Card (from “Barriers in Trans-Dimensional Travel” by R. Lutece)

“When I was a girl, I dreamt of standing in a room looking at a girl who was and was not myself, who stood looking at another girl, who also was and was not myself. My mother took this for a nightmare. I saw it as the beginning of a career in physics.” – Rosalind Lutece

“You have been transfused, brother, into a new reality. But your body rejects the cognitive dissonance with confusion and hemorrhage. But we are together and I will mend you, for what separates us now but a single chromosome?” – Rosalind Lutece

“Comstock seems to have been made sterile by simple exposure to our little contraption. A theory: just as sexual reproduction de-emphasizes the traits of each parent, so does the effect of multiple realities on our own. Your traits dissipate and they become unrecognizable, or cease to exist.” – Rosalind Lutece

“Comstock sabotaged our contraption, yet we are not dead. A theory: we are scattered among the possibility space, but my breather and I are together and so I’m content. He is not. The business with the girl lies unresolved, but perhaps there is one who could finish it in our stead…” – Rosalind Lutece

You know… I know that this is just a video game and all, but I wonder if scientists have ever played around with some of the ideas dreamt up in games like this. Then again, if BioShock Infinite‘s any indication, maybe it’s best left to keep humanity from tearing into the very fabric of space-time, lest you set forth a cataclysm upon the world (and countless others) and have to hire some goon to “wipe away the debt” while you’re floating around in the void. But that’s just me.

Still, food for thought though, amirite?

Bonus

So I’ve been playing through the last episode of Burial at Sea (finally) and, though most of it takes place in Rapture, it seems the Luteces have played a larger role across the franchise than I anticipated. While these are just snippets (I don’t want to spoil everything), here’s a few more diamonds from the transdimensional rough:

Y: You’re a fatalist.
X: A physicist?
Y: A fatalist.
X: So was Newton. Especially when it came to apples falling from trees. They always contrive to land with a splat.

[on Elizabeth’s guilt]
Y: We all have our crosses to bear…
X: …but there’s a fine line between a martyr and a fool.

[on Daisy Fitzroy’s impending death at the hands of Elizabeth in Columbia]
Daisy: You mean I won’t live to see the… [sighs] no…
X: It’s up to you what matters more:
Y: Your part in the play…
X: …or the play itself.
Y: Someone is coming.
X: She’ll arrive a girl.
Y: She must leave a woman.
X: And what makes the difference between a girl and a woman?
Daisy: Blood.
Y: Your part in the play…
X: …or the play itself.
