I don’t know if you knew this but I’m all about tactical realism. If my heartfelt love letter to Project Reality isn’t enough to back this up, I don’t know what else to give you. Well, except that the makers of the very same mod have announced that their new project Squad is set for deployment on Steam this month, opening up to an audience outside their earliest backers from their Kickstarter days.
Development team Offworld Industries announced earlier last month that Squad is coming to Early Access on December 15 at the tune of $39.99, having officially ended pre-purchasing for the game at the end of November:
“We would like to thank every backer and founder that has helped us up to this point, without the financial and moral support of each and every one of you, development would have not been possible. This next very important step to Steam Early Access launch will rely very heavily on this community to ensure all the newcomers experiences are as great as the ones we have already had over the Alpha period. On Steam launch, those that have not pre-purchased will be able to purchase Squad and all future content for USD 39.99 via Steam. Going forward all content, past and present, will be open to all players.”
For those who are unfamiliar with Squad, it’s the predecessor to the old (yet still active) Battlefield 2 mod Project Reality that turns the game into a military sim a-la ArmA–that is, you must be wary, work together with your team, and use limited missions assets and resources wisely. Squad does this not only in standalone, but with a completely new engine made specifically for the purpose of combat simulation. I mean, just look at these:
